The Dream-Killing Mistake New Entrepreneurs Make: Creating a Job Instead of a Business
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that we need to work 9-5, or often more, to achieve success. We're told to put in the hours and hard work now so we can enjoy life later. This conditioning makes us believe that our work must consume most of our time and energy, leaving little room for anything else.
When transitioning from full-time employment to self-employment, it's all too easy to carry this mindset with us, leading to the critical mistake of creating a job instead of a business.
What Does This Mean? What's the Difference?
You are creating a job, not a business, if you:
- Still try to work 8-10 (or more) hour days.
- Are available for appointments 9-5 or beyond.
- Squeeze in activities for your health, well-being, and joy in the early morning or late at night.
- Charge an hourly rate that doesn’t cover non-client-facing hours or include a profit.
By designing your business in this way, you are killing your dream!
Aligning with Your Dream
I know your dream is to have more freedom and flexibility. It's to avoid rushing around and squeezing everything good in between your responsibilities. I know your dream is, yes, to do fulfilling work but to also be able to live and enjoy your life!
If that's your dream, you must start as you mean to go on.
You must start living that way now!
Challenge the Norm
- Create a New Schedule: Challenge the conventional work schedule and design one that aligns with your lifestyle and goals.
- Change How You Work: See if you can accomplish your tasks in less time. Better yet, challenge your idea of what you "need" to get done in a day. Often, we are trying to do too much.
- Reevaluate Your Pricing: Consider changing your pricing structure or your offers to ensure they support the lifestyle you want to live.
You might think you need to put in the hard work now to build your business and reap the benefits later. However, if you maintain the same working habits, you'll still be conditioned to work in the same way. And so the dream will still be at a distance until you break free of that conditioning.
So, why not break free now? Change the programming now! Decide to work in a way, now, that aligns with your dream, your goal, and the future you are creating. Bring your future closer.
The Entrepreneurship Myth
There's a running joke about entrepreneurship: you leave a 9-5 job and end up working 24/7. This is not true! This is the result of a conditioned mind. This is the result of not embracing the power and freedom that entrepreneurship offers.
- Serve Your Clients Selectively: Serve your clients daily, but limit the number to a comfortable level. (Mine is 3! My maximum number of 1:1 60 minute coaching sessions in a day is 3!)
- Prioritise Joy: Dedicate significant time every day to activities that bring you joy and nourishment.
- Take Small, Strategic Actions: Focus on 1-3 small actions daily that will move your business forward. Not 8-hour stints in front of a computer!
Taking small steps forward each day while filling your day with activities that bring you joy will increase your happiness and energy levels. This will raise your vibration, and allow you to attract more of what you want. Instead of working (really hard) towards a dream you will be LIVING THE DREAM!
If you exhaust yourself by working too hard and struggling to see results, you'll vibrate at a lower level, making it difficult to see clearly what's important. Making it harder to keep going because everything feels so challenging.
Conclusion
Break free from the old conditioning now. Create a business that supports the life you want to live, rather than a job that drains your energy. By doing this, you'll align with your true dreams and bring your desired future closer, filled with joy, freedom, and fulfilment.
